A hepatologist is the most experienced and qualified type of doctor to treat people with liver. Gastroenterology emphasis the digestive system and its disorders which include the alimentary canal. It involves a comprehensive understanding of the physiology of the gastrointestinal organs, including the motility of food through the stomach and intestine, the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste out of the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ.
